Ansha
A very popular girl

Ansha is a very popular girl in her neighborhood.
Her backyard is always filled with children from the bairro coming to play with her. And if it is not, it is because she is either out playing in the sandy streets or in school. Yet,it wasn’t always such a cheerful home.

Ansha could neither walk nor talk for a very long time. She lives with her parents, grandma, her 18-year-old sister and a one-year-old brother, who follows her around. Her family is very fond of her and she entered pre-school early to be surrounded by other kids. But in primary school, things took a bad turn. She could not follow the course nor relate with other pupils. The teacher alerted the parents of Ansha’s isolation, as she would stay all day long in the classroom, alone. Her mother brought her back home, helpless.

Ansha’s grandma encountered Elisa, our outreach worker, at the local market. She told her about Ansha, and Elisa came to visit them. Elisa referred them to a school in Maputo, specialised for children with disabilities, and helped them to register Ansha at both school and the students’ bus.

It is now Ansha’s third year in ADEMO school. Being in a school made a difference: Ansha used to barely walk and would not talk at all. She would often fall, and moved her head a lot. She now speaks Changana and Portuguese, runs around all day long, plays hopscotch, sings and is a very popular girl, both in school and at home.

Ansha still has difficulties concentrating and holding a pen. Elisa will see that the school includes her in the physiotherapy sessions they provide. Because Ansha loves to write, she writes in the sand, and eventually, she will write as well on paper. But for the moment, she is enjoying playing with her friends.
